Once upon a time, there was a whale named Rockefeller. Rockefeller was the biggest and meanest animal in the village of Coralina. Unfortunately, due to gerrymandering and an unchecked political machine in the village, Rockefeller was elected mayor of Coralina.
One day, one of the strange, shiny surface monsters died. Instead of blood, an inky toxic substance leaked from its wound, clouding the once clear water. This substance choked and killed all the prey in the village, causing a food shortage and mass panic.
The villagers gathered in front of Rockefeller’s mayoral palace, demanding a solution to the food shortage. Rockefeller opened his door and faced the expectant crowd.
“Citizens of Coralina! Be quiet! I am speaking!” Rockefeller boomed. The villagers hushed down expectantly.
“I know that there is a food shortage due to this mysterious deadly ink. Do not fear! I know the solution.” The villagers sighed in relief.
“Bring all the food you have in your houses to the village storehouse, and I will ration it out to families. For the foreseeable future, our collective efforts will have to see us through this hard time.”
The villagers considered this proposal, and decided it made reasonable sense. The next day, the entire food supply of the village was moved to the storehouse. Under Rockefeller’s directions, every animal received two sardines at each mealtime. The villagers grew thin and were always hungry, yet they endured together.
However, Rockefeller seemed as big as ever.
“How come Rockefeller is still fat?” asked Molly the Mahi Mahi, swaddling her baby, Mason the Mahi Mahi.
“Don’t question it, Molly! He’s a whale, he’s always big!” countered Paul the pike.
“My baby needs more food, Paul! I’m gonna knock on his door and ask for more,” Molly responded.
Molly swam up the driveway of Rockefeller’s palace, and raised her fin to knock on the door, but froze where she was. Through the window, she saw Rockefeller sitting at a table laden with food. Her mouth watered at the sight of the meal, but she was overcome with anger by Rockefeller’s betrayal. She immediately swam back and reported her discovery to the other villagers.
The enraged villagers stormed Rockefeller’s palace, screaming for blood. They found him still stuffing his fat face with food. They grabbed the corrupt mayor by the fins and dragged him to the village square.
“No, no, villagers!” Rockefeller protested. “You must listen to my explanation!” But the villagers paid no heed to his pleas.
“Bring forth the Swordfish!” The mob cried out.
“Nooooo!” yelled Rockefeller, but he was drowned out by the chants of “Swordfish! Swordfish! Swordfish!”
Giovanni the Swordfish stepped forward, staring down at Rockefeller, wanting to savor the terrified look in his watery eyes. With a violent thrust, he stabbed Rockefeller in the neck, and tore down through his body, spilling the contents of his stomach. At the sight of the plentiful half-digested food, the malnourished villagers swarmed his body and lapped up the bloody contents. They then turned to the carcass of Rockefeller and devoured it, picking it to the bone.
Molly the Mahi Mahi was elected as the new mayor. She tried to be a fair leader for the villagers, but the inky cloud remained above Coralina and their food sources never returned. Molly the Mahi Mahi, desperate to feed her baby Mason, ended up stealing from the food stores as well. She too was executed. Eventually, all the food in the village ran out, and the inky toxic cloud settled over the dead bodies of the villagers.
